Hannes Griebel
- Director, Aerospace and Assured Space Systems
- CGI UK
Hannes is a strategic aerospace leader with two decades of experience managing complex projects and programmes in the civil aviation and space industries. As a recognized expert on spacecraft systems engineering, and satellite-based safety and operational services for commercial and business aviation, Hannes is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. He co-chairs the EUROCAE working group for flight recorder minimum operational performance standards and serves on the FAA Aviation Rule Making Committee for investigative technologies (InvTech ARC).
Hannes is a licenced private pilot and an IPMA certified Senior Project Manager.
With a Ph.D. in astronautics and hypersonic vehicle design for atmospheric entry, Hannes spent many years leading the design, construction, test, launch and operations of space vehicles for science and planetary exploration.
After building-up and managing an international technology development programme for a new type of space probe at the University of the Federal Armed Forces of Germany in Munich between 2002 and 2009, Hannes spent two years as Senior Spacecraft Operations Engineer with the European Space Agency’s Mars Express flight operations team.
As Lead Systems Engineer at Thales Air Systems from 2011 to 2013 and Head of Business Development at Thales Alenia Space Germany from 2013 to 2016, Hannes oversaw the development of innovative satellite communication systems for advanced air traffic services and Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System (GADSS) technologies.
Joining Inmarsat in 2016 as product manager for aviation safety and operational services, Hannes focussed on innovative flight operations solutions based on advanced mobile satellite communications and surveillance.
In 2021, Hannes joined CGI as Director for Aerospace and Assured Space Systems, leading a highly skilled team in the development of advanced civil aerospace, aviation, and space solutions.
Based in London, UK, Hannes has been providing aerospace and project management consulting services through Griebel Aerospace Consulting since 2014. Hannes regularly advises investment companies, high tech start-ups and international corporations on strategy, market trends, regulatory questions, product management, technical solutions, and project management.

From Air to Ground
Safer skies rely on Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems that rely on Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) to ensure safe and efficient air traffic flow. ANSPs operating remote centres and towers managing airspace architecture, an integrated ATC, and coordinating aircraft movements, have an increasing workload. How do developments in 4D trajectory based ops (TBO) support air traffic flow? What’s the latest in Performance Based Navigation (PBN), and IRIS Air Traffic Modernization Programme? Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize ATM by improving separation standards, optimizing ground movement, and streamlining take-off procedures. What are the current discussions on AI teaming and online machine learning? By considering factors such as UAM, EVTOLs, UAVs, drone traffic, helicopter operations, and other aircraft types, AI can also assist in developing more efficient and resilient airspace management strategies.
